Writers Resist is a national network of writers driven to defend the ideals of a free, just and compassionate democratic society. The movement rapidly coalesced following the 2016 US presidential election after founder and poet, Erin Belieu, posted on Facebook:
We will not give in to despair. We will come together and actively help make the world we want to live in. We are bowed, but we are not broken.
We are dedicated to
+ Fostering, cultivating and preserving a culture of diversity and inclusion. As writers, and as community members, our human capital is the most valuable asset we have.
+ The collective sum of the individual differences, life experiences, knowledge, inventiveness, innovation, self-expression, unique capabilities and talent that we invest in our words represent a significant part of our culture.
+ With these responsibilities in mind, Writers Resist embraces and celebrates differences in age, color, disability, ethnicity, family or marital status, gender identity or expression, language, national origin, physical and mental ability, political affiliation, race, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, veteran status, and other characteristics that make us unique people.
+ Please keep this commitment to diversity in mind as you plan your event, and make sure that the ways in which you answer this call to action are inclusive, accessible, and welcoming.
